This challenge stands for patience, precision, and continuous growth.
All participants receive a genuine Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) bonsai, complete with instructions. With its delicate leaves, elegant growth form, and excellent tolerance to pruning, the Japanese maple is one of the most popular trees in bonsai design.
Bonsai and Hitachi share more than an aesthetic; they share a philosophy. Just as a bonsai takes years of patient care to reach its full character, lasting innovation is never the result of a single moment, it's built through consistency, discipline, and long-term thinking. Every cut, every season of growth, mirrors the resilience it takes to adapt, recover, and keep moving forward. Nothing about a bonsai is rushed, and nothing about real progress is either.
Over the course of a year, your tree will grow, take shape, and continue to evolve, just as our commitment to sustainable, thoughtful growth continues to shape everything we do.
We invite all participants to share their progress with us regularly. We award points for engagement, creativity, and visible development, and we recognize outstanding contributions on an ongoing basis with attractive prizes.

Over the next few months, you'll grow a real bonsai. And with it, something bigger: a closer connection to Hitachi Vantara, and to each other.
Here's how it'll go. First, we'll walk you through the Challenge itself: the tasks, the points, the leaderboard, what you can win. Then we'll hand things over to our bonsai expert, Dr Carl Morrow, for your first lesson: the essentials of care, right from day one.

Your Bonsai Challenge Journey
1. Registration and Bonsai Collection
Register for the Bonsai Challenge and attend the Hitachi Africa Partner Day event to receive your complimentary bonsai tree. Participation requires registration with a valid address. Please note that the bonsai tree is intended for outdoor care and will be provided free of charge to eligible participants.
2. Care and Development
Throughout the year, we'll support you with regular care tips, expert insights, and updates on standings and prizes. The goal is to continuously develop your bonsai and watch it grow, visibly and steadily.
3. Community and Participation
At regular intervals, we'll invite you to share photos of your bonsai and take part in our social media activities. Active engagement is rewarded with points and factored into the awarding of prizes.

Main Prizes
The three participants with the most points at the end of the challenge will win a Hitachi-organized experience event.
The prizes are tiered:
1st place: Event voucher worth $1,500
2nd place: Event voucher worth $1,000
3rd place: Event voucher worth $500
The events are organized by Hitachi and can be chosen from a selection of suitable experiences, ideal for a team event, a shared activity, or a special experience.
Just as with bonsai, patience, engagement, and continuous development pay off here too. Those who actively participate and show progress throughout the year have the best chances of winning one of the main prizes.
